Red Rock Academy Board Votes To End Pursuit Of Charter School

From the Red Rock Academy website:

Recently the Red Rock Academy founding board met and voted to end the pursuit of opening the school. This was not an easy decision and there were several important reasons leading to this choice. The most important reason was a lack of enough interested parents able to dedicate their time to the school. Without a large number of parents getting fully involved, a charter school cannot be successful.

Why Oppose The Charter School?

We have a new page on the site with our eight specific reasons we oppose the charter school.

Stanford ‘Multiple Choice Credo’ Longitudinal Study

There is a very interesting longitudinal study on charter schools here, which has some insight into how different student populations perform better or worse at charter schools.

What is Our Mission:

Our mission is to unite members of the Berthoud community in opposition of the proposed Red Rock Academy charter school. We offer resources for parents concerned about the school, which is slated to open in Fall 2012 if approved by the district and/or state school boards. The gravity of this decision is summarized perfectly by Len Sherman in the September 24 Loveland Reporter-Herald article titled “Berthoud Charter School Proponents Discuss Plans:”

“My fear is that Thompson School District would wind up having to close a school in Berthoud,” said Len Sherman, board member and a former principal of Berthoud High School. “There are times and places where charter schools are a great idea.” Sherman said the poor economy makes the time wrong, and the size of Berthoud makes it the wrong place.

We need to carefully consider any potential adverse impact the Red Rock Academy charter school will have on Berthoud schools. Contrary to the way the Red Rock Academy has been portrayed in the media, it is NOT a done deal. The Thompson School Board has yet to vote on the charter, and a strong and unified voice from the community will have significant influence on the board’s vote.
